Spanish I and II
Spanish I and II SYLLABUS
Spanish I
This course is designed to teach you Spanish language and culture. The class will be taught largely through words, drawings and actions. The vocabulary will then be applied through short stories. The stories are unusual and fun which help students acquire Spanish language in a natural form. However, it requires student engagement in skits, oral practice and activities. Attendance and engagement are the most important elements for success in this class. Upon completion of Spanish I you will master basic conjugation, irregular conjugation, tener idioms, numbers 0-1,000,000, basic colors, telling time, adjective noun agreement, basic conversational dialogue, Spanish culture, "gustar" type verbs, and about 600 vocabulary words. Additionally, students will have the ability to read, write and comprehend oral Spanish at about a 3rd grade level. All assignments that are not completed in class must be completed by the next class period. Students should expect to study vocabulary 5-15 minutes outside of class daily.
Spanish II
Spanish II will require students to engage at a higher level and use spoken Spanish on a daily basis in class. Mastery of the past tense, future tense, conditional tense, progressive tense, positive and negative commands, perfect tense, indirect and direct object pronouns, sentence grammar structures, culture, an additional 600 or so vocabulary words and the ability to talk about yourself will be the learning goals. The Spanish II student will be required to speak in Spanish through various presentations. Students should expect to study vocabulary 5-15 minutes outside of class daily.
Spanish I and II
Student Expectations and Grades
Most students who are attentive, participatory and engaged will easily learn Spanish. However, some students will need to study vocabulary and complete assignments that they did not finish in class in order to gain proficiency. Attendance is the most important aspect of this class. If you are absent be sure to review unit vocabulary and/or story using the resources provided on my webpage links section. You will find electronic flashcards (that say the Spanish word). We usually review the story 4 times per day so if you are absent you should review the story at least 4 times.
Grades
Tests 70% (tests will require students to speak and understand spoken and written Spanish)
Quizzes/Daily Work 30%
Students are expected to make a daily effort to speak in Spanish. A weekly grade will be given based on the effort students have made. This includes completion of all written assignments, white board practice, and engagement in games and activities oral responses in Spanish.
Daily activities are practice for the test. They are practice, much like you practice for sports and it is important that you give them your best effort.
Projects and/Presentations (maybe used as test grade)
Final Exam 20% of overall grade
Not doing classwork, activities and participation, study sessions, disrespectful actions or gestures to classmate and teacher will result in progressive discipline as per student handbook. Daily work in this class is critical for learning the material. The daily work is not 'busy' work but essential to the learning. Students that refuse to do daily work will be referred to Mr. Kramer (call home to parent and/or meeting with parent).
No exam exemptions passes are accepted for these classes.
